Artist Talk
den Boden unter unseren Füßen
A conversation with Esther Strauss and Nadja Ayoub
“If you face up to the National-Socialist history of your hometown, your own family, you risk the emotional security they both might have provided. If you get to the bottom of things, you may lose the ground beneath your feet. But can we truly claim to honour the victims of the National-Socialists if we continue to protect the perpetrators? The Berlin Federal Archive, besides 12.7 million NSDAP membership cards, also stores personal documents of SA and SS members. If you want to have memberships of relatives checked, you need no more than their name, their date of birth and death. For my performative installation in the context of the exhibition gestures of archiving I print the form for the submission of this application for all the 14,211 inhabitants of the town of Schwaz and keep them ready at Kunstraum Schwaz to be filled in.” [Esther Strauß]
