Exhibition
A series of large-format oil paintings shows streets, squares and shops - views of the city of London taken from Lisa Milroy's daily routes. These are depictions of London's unmistakable structural layout, which do not however focus on the tourist's points of interest, but rather enable the viewer to gain a quotidian access to the city: images from an unscripted journey.
Questions about the perception of surfaces and unknown and mysterious structures that lie behind them are another central theme in the works of Lisa Milroy.
This exterior view is deliberately heightened in Tea Bowls and Clay Objects. Milroy attempts to pull the viewer into her spell through her clever technical skills: vibrant glazing, perfect facades, and sophisticated packaging - surface as a bewitching instrument. Thus questioned, the value concepts and existential elements that lie behind these shining exterior surfaces develop to a further complex level - one which the viewer cannot avoid engaging in a confrontation with.
