Exhibition
in collaboration with Markus Heltschl
Lois Weinberger deals with the themes of interstitial and peripheral zones: municipal badlands, everyday objects and scrub plants. By blanking out the surrounding areas, he focuses on these often-neglected spaces and describes the interface between our perception and complete vanishing. Weinberger opens up the field by researching, fragmenting and poetic license and so transfers the discussion from superficial criticism towards a differential dialogue. In this the artist views scientific research, apocryphal narratives and ethnological traditions as being of equivalent significance in terms of their representational potential. In the exhibition, Weinberger utilises various possibilities of visualization: text, photographs, drawings, mural works, and filmic sequences, created in tandem with a film (As Ever / Am Rande der Arena, 2001) which Weinberger shot with director Markus Heltschl. The common denominators are their shared narrative structures, sequential text passages and superimposed images. Fragmented sentences confront the viewer with their density, but on the other hand also enable him or her to take in the individual object.
